I must have had a deeper subconscious longing for the Arizona deserts, because I found myself returning to those landscapes through paintings.
This intimate collection of five paintings is inspired by multiple campsites from our first year in the van to more recent stays.
Inspiration
Steadfast and Ragged Top Mountain are both inspired by our stays in the Ironwood Forest National Monument, which is named after one of the longest-living trees in the Arizona desert. There’s an otherworldly aspect to walking among the tall saguaro cacti and seeing them in their varying sizes, shapes, and personalities. It’s like weaving through a crowd, but everyone has frozen in place. I’ve camped there several times because it’s such a magical and peaceful place.
Together Forever was inspired by a campsite in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge near Yuma, AZ, during our very first year of van dwelling. These two saguaro were young compared to others in the area. When a saguaro is 6 to 8 feet tall, it is 35 to 70 years old, and they begin to develop arms at 75 to 100 years of age, which is pretty remarkable. This pair stood next to our campsite, and every time I glanced over, it felt like I was witnessing a tender moment between a couple as they took in the view.
Echo from the Past and Whisper are inspired by Monument Valley, which stradles the border of Utah and Arizona. The giant sandstone formations that tower over the desert floor and seemingly appear from nowhere are quite the sight to see. The first time I experienced these unique structures, I was equally amazed by the reflection of the red earth against the clouds. On bright, sunny days, the clouds reflected the warm, earthy red and ochre tones, giving them a blushed, rosy underbelly.
